Visting Dad

Because of several dear friends, who stopped everything they were doing to help me, Claire and I were able to fly last-minute to California to spend time with my Dad and family last week.  My sweet husband stayed home with Hallie, while I carted Claire.  It was difficult to leave one child and husband behind, but those two are best friends and didn't skip a beat without me.  And it was worth it for it was the perfect time to be there.  I felt so blessed to be present for my mom, brothers, and grandma.  And although it was humbling and sometimes harrowing, it was one of the greatest blessings of my life to hold my father's hand and stare at him while he slept after surgery.  I had some intensely spiritual experiences in those hours with him in the hospital.  Because of loyal friends who watched Hallie in Colorado and Claire in California, I have moments I will cherish for the rest of my life.

One of the most important lessons I have re-learned recently is that family is indeed everything.  And that good friends truly are family.  Both my parents and myself have life-long friends as well as newer friends that have sacrificed their time, offered heartfelt prayers, and sent sweet messages to help us.  I am so thankful for the family I was raised in and for the friends I've met along the way.  And I can't begin to state what it means to be a Skaggs.  In addition to incredible parents and grandparents, I have aunts, uncles, and cousins who make life as sweet as it is.

I was nervous about seeing my dad for the first time since he was sick.  I had last seen him when he visited my home in February.  But he didn't even start showing symptoms until the end of March.  The first thing I said to Dad was "Oh, you don't look nearly as bad as I thought you would."  What I really meant to say was "You look totally handsome and I am so relieved I recognize my dad."

Dad  . . .even handsome in a hospital gown.

What a blessing it is that you were able to spend time with your Father and family. I truly admire your smiling face and your upbeat attitude. You are so honest and open on your blog- and it's inspiring to me to see.
Let me know if you need anything.

Michelle, my heart aches for what you and your family are going through. Your faith and courage are such an example. Even though we didn't know each other too well in Rexburg, I still could tell you were amazing, and following your blog through the years has made you even more of an inspiration to me of the type of mom and wife I want to be. So it is obvious that your dad is amazing as well. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers-take care!

Such a beautiful post. Your Mom is beautiful, you are beautiful, and your Dad really is so handsome :) I truly believe that we have the best family in the world, so many ppl don't have close relationships with cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents. I feel it such a privilege to know your dad, to call him my uncle, and be a part of the same eternal family. You got some great pictures, so good to "see" your family. I love you all :)
