Mother/Daughter Night

I was ready to title this post "too bad she looks like my sister (not my mom)."   But then I realized that's a good thing!  Let's just cross our fingers I have her genes!  This is my mom and I on a special Mother/Daughter evening.  We went to dinner and then out for frozen yogurt.  We also went to see Twilight: Eclipse the morning it came out.  What a nice mommy . . . and a pretty one too!

Family Beach Party

Our family had a beach party while we were all together in California.  I've noticed that I like the gatherings when we are all together because it feels like Dad is there even though he (technically) isn't.  It feels like he is sitting down chatting with the group next to you or walking with one of the kids along the shoreline.  We really enjoyed ourselves . . . roasting hot dogs and marshmallows, chomping on chips and Kaylene's salsa and watching John in his "pyro glory" as he manned our fire.  Dan watched Claire most of the evening . . . which allowed Chris and I more time to relax.  I think Dan and Claire are meant to be.  She is kind of the female version of Dan twenty-five years later.  Dan can attest that Claire was enamored with sand.  We stayed until it grew dark and Claire just couldn't take being awake anymore.  Then we carted a screaming Claire and a tired Hallie back to the car and drove home contentedly (and with music blaring to camoflauge Claire's screams).

Chris will kill me for this . . . but my husband is a total stud.  Sigh!

Classic game of catch with Dan and Mark

There's the stud again.

Mom is sporting her classic "eyes closed" look.  Watch for future pics of Hallie . . . her eyes are closed in almost every one.

Hallie and Joe are stretching in the stand.  "Up-down, touch the ground . . . "

Left: Claire's "scrunchy" face; Right: Not Amanda's best photo, but I think Mark looks stellar.

Dan preps Claire for future surfing lessons.

Love the fire's glow on those cute faces!

Our girls love their Skaggs family!

A bundled bunch

John tames the flames with his powers . . . ha ha.

Look at the family my mom and dad built.  Gosh, I love them.

Shooby-Dooby down to Ruby's

Every trip to CA deserves a fun trip to Ruby's.  It's another great excuse to hit the beach and get great food at the same time.  We strolled down the pier with our bathing suit cuties in tow.  Can you even handle the cuteness of those swimsuits?  Thank you, Old Navy.  I think the suits match the 50s coolness of Ruby's itself.  As for the pictures, my camera turned the background into white.  But for those of you who don't know where we are . . . we are at the end of a pier so every view out the window is endless ocean blue waves.  What's not to love about ocean views at lunch?

Claire pulled a Houdini and did her best to escape the binds of her carseat straps.

Look at our little California girl enjoying a PCH drive with the windows rolled down.

My Favorite Park

I'm a huge fan of Heritage Park in Cerritos, CA.  My mom took us a couple times when we were little and I was hooked.  It is one of the places I like to go back to every summer.  This year I got us lost in Long Beach on the way there.  I felt very embarassed about my navigation skills.  (Ask Chris -- I'm sorta prideful about that stuff).  But we made it!  And it was just as cool as I remembered.  It is patterned after Boston in the Colonial era.  You know Chris and I love Boston.  And our little girls love this park.

Tell me this doesn't tug at your heart strings . . .

Version 2, however . . . makes me laugh out loud!

You're a doctor?!

"You're a doctor?!"  These are the words that Hallie asked/announced to Laura when we visited our favorite Pediatric Nurse Practitioner at her clinic.  Hal, of course, knows and loves Laura.  But she thinks of Laura more of the fun friend who spoils her.  She had no idea of Laura's other secret superhero identity.

I thought Hallie might be nervous to be checked out by Laura.  It was quite the opposite reaction.  She was thrilled!  Hallie announced several times that she was a "little doctor" like Laura.  Then she stomped up and down the clinic halls like she owned the joint.

Thanks, Nurse Laura!  We wish we could see you for all our little health needs.
Although . . . we call you about most of them anyway.

Broke-lyn and Howie

Want to know a cool coincidence?  When one of your favorite friends since Kindergarten finds out she is pregnant with her first child just weeks after you find out.  Want to know what is even cooler?  When you both have girls!  Julie's daughter Brooklyn and my daughter Hallie (you all know Hallie) have been friends since they were two and four months old!  But, living two states away, they see each other about once a year.  Thankfully, this year we were able to hang out at the beach and at Laura's house.  Here is our precious beach day.  It was gray but not too chilly.  The girls basically had the harbor to themselves and Julie and I could just chat.  Poor Julie got to listen to me give the nitty-gritty details of the last days of my father's life.  Poor friend!  But what a friend she is.  Even though our conversation was deep at times, it skipped around to a million random topics like old friends do.  It was still a light, fun day.

I've titled this post Broke-lyn and Howie because our cute three-year-olds can't say each other's names correctly even if we bribed them with candy (which is actually how I got Hallie to got to the car without a fit at the end of the day).

This is the beach my mom took us to when we were little!

Of course, Julie brought the cool beach toys (she is always so well-prepared).

Cheese!

"Wade in the water . . ." Julie might remember that song.

Love this one!  They match their swimsuits.
Brooklyn is calm like a Disney princess and Hallie is all jazzed like the yellow sun.

Silly girls!

Dinner with the Schmidt's

Meet Camille.  Camille and I met in a British Literature class in college.  She sat in front of me.  We started to chat before and after classes.  Turns out, we were from the same place, sunny Southern CA.  As our friendship grew we realized that wasn't the only thing we had in common.  We loved the same books, music, musicals, and we could talk for hours!  Our favorite summer time activity was to get smoothies after class and then sit by this secluded lake at a nearby park.  We talked about our families and our dreams for our future families.  We also talked about the comforts of home-- of Disneyland and the beach.  Chris and I were already married when we went to BYU-Idaho so he spent lots of time with Camille too.  He loved Camille just as much as I did.  One semester when Camille was away from school, she met John.  Cut to four years later and they are happily married with two cute boys and they own a home just minutes away from my parents.  This means I can now see Camille, John, Spencer, and Logan whenever I go home.  Yes!

There are two things in our home that are often said about Camille.  I say that Camille was one of the best blessings I received at BYU-I.  Chris knows what a true friend Camille is so when I meet new friends he uses Camille as a gage.  "Is she a Camille?"  Those are two pretty great things to say about a pretty great person.

Camille and Logan (he wasn't really picking his nose, the camera caught him at the wrong time)
